
Max Hammel is a video artist and director based in cologne (GER).
Since 2025, Max has been the Creative Director at Schauspiel Köln, where he leads the rebranding and campaigning for the debut season under Kay Voges. from 2020 - 2025, he has worked as the artistic director of the video department at Volkstheater in Vienna, where he integrated multimedia into live productions.
In 2024, he received the Video Artist of the Year award from Theater Heute. Additionally, he has been a lecturer at University of Applied Arts Vienna, University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and University of Art and Design Linz.
Previously, Hammel worked on campaigns for CORRECTIV.org & DOSSIER and he was the creative director for Die Bierpartei, contributing to various political campaigns, including the 2022 presidential elections and the 2020 Vienna elections. His role as a district councillor for the fiftennth district of Vienna from 2020 to 2024 further underscores his commitment to community engagement.
From 2010 to 2020, Hammel was the director and cinematographer at infamous.at, collaborating with notable international agencies such as VICE Austria, DENTSU Japan, Jung von Matt/Donau and many more. His work spans commercials, documentaries, and music videos, filmed across diverse locations including Germany, France, Brazil, and Japan.
Hammel has collaborated with acclaimed artists like Paul McCarthy, Werner Herzog, Jonathan Meese, CALEXICO, Danger Dan, Lydia Haider, Kay Voges and many more. His productions have been showcased at events such as the Cannes Lions Festival, the Biennale de Lyon or Diagonale Graz.
2016 Hammel earned a degree in Feature Film Screenwriting from ESEC Film School, Paris, enriching his artistic vision and expanding his influence in contemporary video art.
